Youth Dies Of Gunshot Wound
Delbert Gearhart, 20, Ira, who was shot last Thursday about two miles from Ira, died at 1:06 p.m. Monday at Skiff Memorial hospital.
Sheriff Ed Scoville said today that he had visited Gearhart and that the youth told him the wound in the abdomen was self-inflicted. Scoville said, however, that investigation of the case is continuing.
Gearhart was found Thursday morning lying in a creek suffering from exposure and loss of blood. He had been unconscious for hours after being brought to the hospital.

Delbert Gearhart Services Will Be Held on Thursday
Baxter (Special) – Funeral services for Delbert Dean Gearhart, 20, of Ira, who died at 1:06 Monday at Skiff Memorial hospital of gunshot wounds suffered last Thursday, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Ira Methodist church.
Elder D. C. Brutherus of the Seventh Day Adventist church in Des Moines will officiate, and burial will be in the Union Chapel cemetery located west of Ira.
The Boyd-Nickell funeral home in Baxter is in charge of arrangements.
Gearhart was found Thursday morning lying in a creek near Ira with a gunshot wound in his body near the left side of the diaphragm.
Sheriff Ed Scoville, who visited the Ira youth in the hospital, said that Gearhart had told him the wound was self-inflicted.
Gearhart, suffering from exposure and loss of blood, regained consciousness Friday and clung tenaciously to life over the weekend.
The son of John and Pearl Gearhart, he was born Nov. 5, 1934 at Ira. A Life-long resident of Ira, he attended Ira and Mingo schools.
He was employed at the Maytag company in Newton between 1952 and 1954 but recently had been employed as a tiler.

Delbert Gearhart Services Today
Ira – Services were held Thursday at the Ira Methodist church for Delbert Gearhart, 20, who died last Monday of a gunshot wound suffered a week ago. Burial was in Union Chapel cemetery.
Rev. Wayne Weeda and Elder D. C. Butherius were in charge of the service.
Music was a duet sung by Elder Walter Webb and Mrs. Webb. Norma Stark was the pianist. Flowers were in charge of Valerie Allen, Evelyn McClelland and Mrs. Nichol.
Pallbearers were James Lane, David Lane, Keith Warner, Larry Beard, Terry Brain and Francis Humes.
