Richard Crozier Feared Blindness; Took Own Life
Tragedy Took Place Thursday Afternoon on Ralph Crozier Farm Near Ira
Richard Crozier, 23, of Ira, took his own life Thursday afternoon at the farm home of his father, Ralph Crozier, located between Mingo and Ira.
Richard and his young wife were living in Ira and he was assisting with the work on his father’s farm.
Thursday evening, Mr. Crozier went to the farm of his father to do chores as usual. When he didn’t return by 9 o’clock his wife, the former Arlene Baker, went to the farm to look for him. Finding the place dark she went to the Ira church where she found her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Baker. They went to the Crozier farm and entered the house and found a note stating fear of blindness and becoming a burden was the cause of his rash act. Summoning others from town and after searching for some time, they found him in the haymow. His parents were attending a basketball game at Farrar that evening.
County Coroner Ralph Toland, who was called to the scene of the tragedy stated he had taken his own life by hanging and that no inquest would be held.
Mr. Crozier was a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Navy.
He attended the Colfax high school but after the family moved to the farm near Ira he attended and graduated from the Mingo High school.
Besides his wife he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Crozier, one brother, Donald, a student in Mingo High school and one sister, Mrs. Wm. (Ardena) Gibson of Marysville, Mo.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Methodist church in Ira. Rev. B. H. Finch of Killduff and Rev. C. H. Hiller of Des Moines officiated. Interment was in the Union Chapel cemetery,
