Jennie Van Maanen, 83, of 604 E. Third St. S. died Thursday, March 24, 2005, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held today at Christian Reformed Church in Sully with the Rev. Jack Gray officiating. Burial was at Sully Cemetery. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton handled the arrangements.

Memorials may be directed in her name to Sully Christian School Endowment Fund or "Back to God Hour" radio program.

The daughter of Tunis and Nellie (Stek) Nikkel, she was born June 16, 1921, in Taintor. She attended Sully Christian School. On June 18, 1941, she married John W. Van Maanen at her parents' home in Sully. She was a homemaker and helped her husband on the family farm. She was a member of Sully Christian Reformed Church and was an avid letter writer to her family and friends. She was a resident of Sully and Newton.

Survivors include her husband; a son, John Walter Van Maanen of Waverly; five daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and Vernon Vander Weerdt of Sully, Betty and Bert Poiman of Hamilton, Canada, Marva and John Tolson of State Center, Joy and John McGinley of Newton and Norma and Bill Rozendaal of Grinnell; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Cornelia and Fred Loynachan of Marion, Harriet Zylstra of Pella and Sylvia and Gys Menninga of Chicago, Ill; four brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Anna Mae Nikkel of Sully, Leo and Joan Nikkel of Pella, Renee and Jan Nikkel of Ripon, Calif., and Nelson and Norma Nikkel of Pella; and two sisters-in-law, Louise Nikkel of Pella and Lucille Nikkel of Grinnell.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Edward and Wilbur Nikkel, and a brother-in-law.
