Albertha Van Engelenburg, 89, of 312 W. 11th St. N. died Monday, May 9, 2005, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Christian Reformed Church in Newton with the Rev. Linda Butler of St. Luke United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call Wednesday after 3 p.m. at the funeral home, where the family will be available from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Memorials will be accepted in her name to Hospice of Jasper County or Christian Reformed Church of Newton.

The daughter of Jella and Jacoba (Terlouw) Slings, she was born Jan. 22, 1916, in rural Prairie City. She attended rural Jasper County schools. On Jan. 17, 1945, she married John Van Engelenburg in Kellogg. She was a homemaker and helped her husband on the family farm. She was a meat cutter for Stockton's Super Valu in Newton.

Mrs. Van Engelenburg was an active member of Christian Reformed Church choir, chairperson of the church kitchen committee, a member of Jasper County Historical Society, Jasper County Conservation board and Mary Martha Circle. She was a lifelong resident of Jasper County and enjoyed gardening, cooking, making pies and the outdoors.

Survivors include two sons, Don (Vicki) Van Engelenburg of Champaign, Ill., and Jim and Rhonda Van Engelenburg of Newton; a grandson and granddaughter; one great-grandson; a sister, Betty (Dean) Ward of Newton; and two brothers, Hubert (Erma) Slings and Ed (Gertrude) Slings, all of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a brother, John Slings.
