Winifred A. Tiedje, 85, of Newton died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at Park Centre Health Care in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Newton with the Rev. Steve Mathison-Bowie officiating. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may visit with the family following the service during a coffee time at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted to create an endowment for the art department or to Willowbrook Adult Day Care.

The daughter of Burton Henry and Imogene (Dodge) Wormley, she was born Aug. 9, 1919, in Newton. She graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1937 and attended Simpson College. On Jan. 31, 1941, she married Harold Tiedje in rural Newton. She taught rural school in Malaka Township and was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, taught Sunday school, was a deacon, a charter member of Jasper County Historical Society, Newton Community School board member during the re-organization in 1958 to 1961. She also was a chairman for Jasper County Farm Bureau Women, a member of Newton Retirement Foundation, Inc., Park Centre Advisory Council and Beyond War Movement. She was an artist and enjoyed painting. She made quilts, was a 4-H Club leader and enjoyed the outdoors. She received the Wallace's Farmer Master Farm Homemaker award in 1964.

Survivors include her husband; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Linda Beth Tiedje of Lancing, Mich., and Rick and Margie Tiedje of Newton; a daughter and son-in-law, Barb and Dan Wexler of Madison, Wis.; a sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and John Singer of Iowa City; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Ruth Wormley and Marge Tiedje, both of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, George and Robert Wormley.
