Dean A. Spence, 56, of 402 W. Third St. S. died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, at his home.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Newton Union Cemetery with the Lt. Ronald Cook and Lt. Carol Cook of The Salvation Army Church officiating. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may visit with family during a lunch at the American Legion following the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted in his name.

The son of Earnest Roy and Velma Irene (Burton) Spence, he was born March 21, 1948, in Marshalltown. He graduated from Semco High School in Laurel in 1966. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict. On Oct. 21, 1978, he married Cynthia Ann Burg in Las Vegas, Nev. He retired from maintenance at the Maytag Company, where he worked as a pipe fitter. He was a member of Newton American Legion Post No. 111 and 40/8, VFW Post No. 1655, Jasper County Vietnam Vets and Newton Moose Lodge. He enjoyed the outdoors and was a handyman for all his friends and family.

Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Jenny Spence of Newton; a daughter, Brooke Spence and her fiancé, Lucas Smith of Ames; his mother Velma Spence of Newton; and a brother and two sisters-in-law, Irvin and Karen Spence of Fairfield and Marlyn Spence of Traer.

He was preceded in death by his father.
