Dorothy E. Sparks, 88, formerly of Lynnville, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Lynnville Friends Church with the Rev. Jeff Lee officiating. Burial will be at Woodland Cemetery in Lynnville.
Visitation will begin at noon Sunday at the Harden Funeral Home in New Sharon, where the family will greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. A memorial fund has been established in her name.

Dorothy Elizabeth was born Sept. 17, 1916, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Orland and Gertrude McClung Davis. She was a graduate of Lynnville High School and attended William Penn College in Oskaloosa. She was a country schoolteacher near Lynnville and a substitute teacher at Lynnville-Sully schools. On June 5, 1941, she married Kenneth Asa Sparks at her parents' home near Lynnville She worked for many years as a nurse's aide at the Friendship Manor in Grinnell.

Mrs. Sparks was a longtime member of the Lynnville Friends Church, where she taught Sunday School and Bible School, served on many committees and was the children’s Sunday School pianist. She enjoyed spending time with children, crocheting, cooking and baking.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Tom Norman of Linwood, Kan., Marjorie Sparks of Des Moines and Nancy and Marvin Berk of Louisburg, Kan.; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Keith Alan Sparks; two brothers, John and Dwight Davis; and a sister, Mae Hunt.
