Hubert Adrian Slings, 87, of Newton died Sunday, May 30, 2005, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Christian Reformed Church in Newton with the Rev. Robert Holwerda officiating. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Cemetery. Wallace Family Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the Newton Christian School or Christian Reformed Church and may be left at the funeral home or at the church the day of the service.

The son of Jella and Jacoba (Terlouw) Slings, he was born Dec. 11, 1917, in rural Pella. On Dec. 4, 1941, he married Erma Vander Linden in Pella. He farmed for 48 years and retired in 1983. He enjoyed fishing and hunting in his younger years.

Mr. Slings lived in rural Colfax for 48 years and moved to Newton in 1989. He was an active member of the Newton Christian Reformed Church and served as a deacon. He also served on the Prairie City School Board.

Survivors include his wife, Erma V. Slings of Newton; a son, Robert (Carol) Slings of New Brighton, Minn.; a daughter, Connie (Elwood) Van Zee of Newton; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Ed (Gert) Slings of Newton; and a sister, Betty (Dean) Ward of Newton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant granddaughter; a brother, John Slings; and a sister, Alberta Van Engelenburg.
