Alvin G. Schmitt, 79, of Newton, formerly of Sac City, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sac City with the Rev. Larry McCarty officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Sac City.

Local visitation will be held today after 5 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton, where the family will greet friends immediately following the vigil service, during a coffee time in McCann Center of Sacred Heart Church. The vigil service will be held at the church at 7 p.m. and the Rev. Ernie Braida will officiate.

The family will greet friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City. Memorials will be accepted to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society and may be left at either funeral home or at the churches at the time of the service.

The son of George and Eva (Feltes) Schmitt, he was born Sept. 5, 1925, in Boyer Valley Township in Sac County. On Aug. 10, 1948, he married Vernabelle D. Meyer in Early. He later married Lula P. Osborn on Sept. 14, 1985, in Newton. He was a farmer and brick mason and retired in 1988.

Mr. Schmitt was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sac City for 50 years and also was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton. He enjoyed trains, reading and brick work.

He is survived by his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Susan Schmitt of Pocahontas; a step-daughter and son-in-law, Louise and Ora Seals of Newton and Jane and Charles Wertz of Eureka, Ill.; three step-sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Fran Cupples of Fullerton, Neb., Tom Cupples and friend Bertha Crook of Knoxville and Herman and Connie Cupples of Newton; two grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; three brothers, John, Joseph and Leo Schmitt; and three sisters, Hilda Hatting, Marie Ziegmann and Louise Baker.
