BAXTER -- Richard B. "Dick" Schmidt, 80, of Marshalltown, formerly of Baxter, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Baxter Congregational United Church of Christ with the Rev. Rollin Watters officiating. Burial will be at the Restland Cemetery in Baxter.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the Boyd-Davis Funeral Home in Baxter, where his family will be present to greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed in his name to his family.

The son of John Henry and Beulah Ann (Patterson) Schmidt, he was born Sept. 8, 1924, in Baxter. He was raised and educated in Baxter. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following an honorable discharge, he returned home to Baxter and married Norma Jean Akins on May 16, 1953, in Mingo. They made their home in Baxter where they raised their family.

Mr. Schmidt was employed by Maytag in Newton for more than 30 years. He retired in 1982. He enjoyed fishing, camping, carpentry and model trains. He was a member of the Baxter Congregational United Church of Christ, the Central Iowa BBQ Club, the Campers Club, the V.F.W. Post No. 1655 of Newton the and the Baxter American Legion Post 493.

Survivors include his wife Norma of Marshalltown; three daughters and two sons-in-law Suzanne and Ed Van Zandt of Newton, Judy Francis of Dallas, Texas, and Diane and John Engle of Baxter; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Nadine and Glenn Dee of Baxter, Margaret Ann and Charles Swalwell and Joan and Bert Smith, all of Newton; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Leland and Laura Schmidt of Portland, Tenn., Eugene and Loretta Schmidt of Marshalltown and Larry and Janice Schmidt of Baxter; two grandsons; two great-granddaughters; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son Randy; two sisters, Leona Fahrney and Esther Shattuck; and two brothers John Schmidt Jr. and Charles Schmidt.
