GRINNELL — Albert Schinckel, 83, of Grinnell, formerly of Newton, died Friday, March 11, 2005, at the Mayflower Health Care Center in Grinnell.

A funeral mass will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Brooklyn with the Rev. Brian Shepley officiating. Burial will be at the Calvary Cemetery in Brooklyn.

Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, where the family will be present from 6 to 7:30 p.m. A scripture service and rosary will follow at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Sheltered Care Unit at the Mayflower Health Care Center.

The son of Remi and Celina (DeClercq) Schinckel, he was born May 31, 1921, in Brooklyn. He was raised on a farm near Brooklyn and educated in a rural school near his home. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II and served in the Pacific Theatre at New Guinea. On Feb. 19, 1946, he married Frances E. Hall in Brooklyn. The couple farmed in the Brooklyn and Malcom area prior to moving to a farm near Kellogg in 1967. They later moved to Newton in 1979, where the couple became part owners of C&A Small Engine Repair Shop. They retired to Seeland Park in Grinnell in 2000. Mr. Schinckel was a member of the National Farmers Organization.

Survivors include three daughters, Diana Tully of Warrenton, Va., Denise Hartz of Jackson, Tenn., and Darlene Mesch of Littleton, Colo.; one sister, Germaine Purdum of Malcom; two brothers, Marvin Schinckel of Victor and Raymond Schinckel of Grinnell; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Frances in 2002.
