Melvin L. "Pat" Patterson, 74, of 304 E. 26th St. S. died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Merle Smith, chaplain of Skiff Medical Center, officiating. Burial will be at Colfax Cemetery.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted in his name or to Hospice of Jasper County.

The son of L.W. "Jack" and Cordella (Price) Patterson, he was born Nov. 9, 1930, in Prairie City. He attended country school and high school in the Prairie City area. On Aug. 8, 1950, he married Donna Joyce Annis in Mitchellville. He was a truck mechanic, truck driver for O.T. Scott Trucking and a GM certified mechanic for Maples Chevrolet. He retired in 1992.

Mr. Patterson was a member of Howard Street Christian Church in Colfax and a member of bowling leagues and the Friday night leagues at T & M Lanes. He raced stock cars in Newton, Des Moines and Knoxville.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gene and Glenna Patterson and Roger and Lynn Patterson, all of Newton; a daughter-in-law, Julie Patterson of Newton; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; his mother of Newton; and three sisters, Thelma Lou Carter of Newton, Pauline Pinkerton of New Sharon and Martha Patterson of Prairie City.

He was preceded in death by his father and two sons, Randall Duane Patterson and Steven Ray Patterson.
