Alan B. Murray, 97, of 500 First St. N. died Wednesday, March 9, 2005, at Park Centre Health Care in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Newton with the Rev. Tiare Mathison-Bowie officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.
Friends may call in the main lounge of Park Centre in Newton following the service. Memorials will be accepted in his name to DMACC Scholarship Fund — Newton Campus.

The son of Charles and Curtie (Murray) Murray, he was born Nov. 15, 1907, in Custer City, Okla. He graduated from high school in Olathe, Okla., and attended Junior College in Grand Junction, Colo. On May 27, 1933, he married Frances Patrick in Kansas City, Mo. He began working for the Maytag Company in 1928 and retired on Nov. 15, 1972, as a manager for the market and product planning department.

Mr. Murray was a director of Newton Rotary Club, an elder at the First Presbyterian Church, past board member of Newton Country Club, service committee member of American Washer and Ironer Manufacturer's Association, Maytag Management club and Maytag's Twenty-five Year Club in 1955. He was appointed to the Newton City Council in 1961 and served for seven years. He also was a member of the Newton Board of Adjustment from 1968 until 1990.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Charles Alan and Catherine Murray of Burkitsville, Md.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Tom Emmerson of Ames and Pricilla and Andy Conway of Dublin, Ireland; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lois Brewer of Alamogordo, N.M.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and two sisters, Lena Hunter and Ruby Westfall.
