MARENGO — D. Joelle Mitchell, 92, of Marengo died Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo.

A graveside service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton with the Rev. John Epperson, pastor of the Grinnell Christian Church, officiating.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday.

The daughter of Fred Elmore and Lena Mae Paulson Young, she was born July 15, 1912, near Rock Creek Lake in Jasper County. She was raised in Rock Creek Township and later in the Palo Alto area south of Newton. She graduated from Newton Senior High School and moved to Oakland, Calif., in the early 1930s.

During World War II, she worked for the Kaiser Corporation building ships. On May 10, 1945, she married Manford Mitchell. The couple lived in California, Oregon and Florida before retiring and residing in Palm Desert, Calif. She moved to the Walden Place in Iowa City in the fall of 2001, and she has lived at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo since April of 2005.

She is survived by one niece, Janet (Richard) Arduser of Ladora, and her grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Hazel Bengston; and three brothers, Howard, Paul and Maurice Young.
