Mary Katherine McConnell, 79, of Newton died Wednesday, May 25, 2005, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton with the Rev. Ernest Braida officiating. Burial will be at Georgetown Cemetery. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call between 3 and 5 p.m. today at the funeral home. A public wake service will begin at 7 p.m. at the church. Memorials will be accepted to Oblates Mission, Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Hospice of Jasper County.

The daughter of Robert E. and Florence A. (O'Connor) Craig, she was born Oct. 1, 1925, in Albia. She is a Newton Senior High School graduate. She was a bookkeeper and worked for the FBI in Washington D.C., Fred Nesbitt Distribution in Des Moines, the Iowa Office of the Federal Reserve Bank and the Best Western Inn in Newton. She retired in 1990. She lived in Chariton, Newton, Washington, D.C. and Des Moines.

Survivors include a son, Bob McConnell of Des Moines; four daughters, Cynthia Buchmeier of Newton, Gretchen McKinley of Waterloo, Mari Tomlinson of Largo, Fla., and Michelle Choda of Altoona; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter and son at birth, two grandsons at birth and a sister, Janet Bye.
