LEAWOOD, Kan. — Jack Duncan McClelland, 85, of Leawood, Kan., formerly of Newton, died Friday, May 27, 2005.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, 9100 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kan.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, Ill. 60601 or at www.alz.org. Arrangements were taken care of by D.W. Newcomer's Sons Overland Park Chapel in Overland Park, Kan.

The son of Roger and Creola McClelland, he was born Jan. 8, 1920, in Newton. He graduated from Newton Senior High School and Drake University. He attended Drake on an basketball scholarship and served as co-captain his senior year. While at Drake, he also played baseball and was elected to the Baseball Team of the Century in 1981. After graduation, he spent four years as a high school coach. His 1943 football team went undefeated and unscored upon for the season. Then his career took him back to Drake, where he served as basketball coach and athletics director for many years. After Drake, he served as commissioner of the North Central Conference, commissioner of the Conference of Midwestern Universities and assistant commissioner of the Big Eight Conference. In 1973, he received the Drake University Double D Award honoring letter winners for distinguished achievement.

He enjoyed dogs, reading, traveling and dining out, and in his later years, he became a Johnson County Master Gardener and a member of Gardeners of America in Overland Park, Kan.

Survivors include his wife, Helen; sons, John of Leawood, Kan., and Paul of Flagstaff, Ariz.; a brother, Ron of Marshalltown; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death a brother, Paul.
