Gladys M. Emperley, 70, of Newton died of cancer Wednesday at Skiff Medical Center. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home. Burial will be in Newton Union cemetery.

Mrs. Emperley was born in Brooklyn and had lived in the Newton area since 1952. She had been a clerk at the Newton and Kellogg post offices and retired from the Newton Post Office.

Surviving are her husband, William "Del"; a daughter, Karen Schilling of Rome, GA.; a son, Dennis of Jacksonville, N.C.; two brothers, Max Meldrem and Ray Meldrem, both of Grinnell; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Friends may call after 8 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Kellogg United Methodist Church of Kellogg Historical Society.
