TOPPENISH, Wash. -- Sylvia (Rethmeier) Lindsey, 80, of Toppenish, Wash., formerly of Jasper County, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at Toppenish Hospital in Toppenish, Wash.

Services were held Feb. 11 in Washington. Memorials will be accepted to the Humane Society.

The daughter of William Rethmeier and Elsa (Menke) Rethmeier, she was born March 1, 1924, in rural Newton, in Jasper County Malaka Township. She received a teaching certificate in 1948 from Drake University and taught school until she retired. She taught at Arcadia, Rhodes and Grinnell before moving to Toppenish, Wash. On Aug. 11, 1956, she married Ernest W. Lindsey in Toppenish, Wash. She enjoyed teaching, antiques, collectibles and was a member of Antiques Club and Business Women's Club, among others.

Survivors include her husband; a son, James Lindsey of Montana; two daughters, Julie Lindsey Knauss of Washington and Janice Lindsey Bourne of California; one niece, Jeannette Grimes of Newton; six grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Reno Rethmeier and one in infancy.
