Leona J. Engle

Leona Julie Hummel Engle, 83, of Embassy Manor Care Center, formerly of 323 E. 12th St. N., a lifelong resident of Jasper County, died Monday evening, Feb. 19, at Skiff Medical Center of heart failure.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Devin T. Bauder, pastor of the Immanuel Baptist Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Palo Alto Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home aftr 8 a.m. Thursday, Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials in her name may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are a son, Harold C. of Baxter; three daughters, Donna Jean (Mrs. Floyd) Mulbrook and Mary Lou (Mrs. Richard) Lincoln, both of Newton, and Bette Ann (Mrs. Bernard) Lindsey Jr. of Calamus; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, H. Gail, in 1982, a son, Gorman, in 1969, 12 brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Engle was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church, Helping Hands Club, Home Friends Circle, Jasper County Chorus and Sugar Grove Grange.

Mrs. Engle, who had worked at Newton Manufacturing Co., was a retired employee of Hamilton’s Upholstery.

The daughter of John and Anna Robison Hummel, she was born Aug. 21, 1906 in Jasper County and was educated in Jasper County schools.

She was married to Harold Gail Engle Dec. 24, 1926 in Newton. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton Iowa, February 19, 1993.
