Steven J. Karsten, 32, of Newton died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. tonight at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Chaplain Merle Smith of Skiff Medical Center in Newton officiating. Burial will be at Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton at a later date.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. today until the time of the service. Memorials may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association or to the Hospice of Jasper County and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Terry and Debbie Vanderpool Karsten, he was born Nov. 24, 1972, in Albuquerque, N.M. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1991 and from Des Moines Area Community College in 1993. He also attended the University of Northern Iowa and Southwest Missouri State University. He had worked as a teller at the F&M Bank drive-up window in Newton and also had worked at Hy-Vee East in Newton. He loved the Iowa Hawkeyes and enjoyed all sports, especially football, hockey and car racing. He also enjoyed reading, cooking, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his parents of Newton; a brother, David M. Karsten of Ames; his maternal grandfather, Dale Vanderpool of Lander, Wyo.; and his paternal grandmothers Rubye Karsten of Mesa, Ariz., and Grace Kolling of Portland, Ore.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Jay Karsten, and his maternal grandmother, Ruth Simbro.
