ORMOND BEACH, FLA. — Elias John Hughes, 86, of Ormond Beach, Fla., formerly of Newton, died Sunday, May 1, 2005, in Ormond Beach.

His body has been cremated and services will be held in Ormond Beach, Fla. Burial will be at a later date at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Newton. Volusia Memorial Funeral Home in Ormond Beach, Fla., is handling arrangements.

He was born Feb. 25, 1919, in Iowa City. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941 and served in England until after D-Day, then completed his World War II service in France and Belgium. He retired from the Air Force in 1963 and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was employed in the furniture repair business for Ethan Allen Company and Universal Furniture Company in Fort Worth, Texas. He lived in Newton and Fort Worth, Texas, with his first wife, Mary Jane Hummel, who died in 1993. In 1995, he married Gloria (Dickens) Winters and they resided in the Aberdeen Community in Ormond Beach, Fla., for the past five years, where he had been an active member of his community.

Mr. Hughes was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church, a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a longtime member of the American Legion. He most recently was a resident of the Avante Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Ormond Beach, Fla.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria; sons, Chuck (Chris) of Tacoma, Wash., and David (Tish) of Powderly, Texas; three step-sons, Bill (Donnette) Winters of Ormond Bech, Fla., Michael (Becky) Winters of Tampa, Fla., and Lewis (Angie) Winters of Austin, Texas; four step-daughters, Karol (Bob) White of Apopka, Fla., Pat (Jim) Jarnagin of Bedford, Texas, Mary Gay (David) Rummel of Columbia, S.C., and Ann (Joe) Hotung of Rockville, Md.; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Loretta (Kent) Angerer of Iowa City and Charlotte Williams of Coralville. Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - ORMOND BEACH, Fla. — Elias John Hughes, 84, of Ormond Beach, Fla., formerly of Newton, died April 21, 2005, of congestive heart disease in Ormond Beach, Fla.
Graveside services will be held today at 1 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Newton. His body was cremated.

He was born in 1924 and was a member of the American Legion and Knights of Columbus. He formerly lived in Midtown Apartments.
Survivors include two sons, Charles Robert (Chris) Hughes and David Lee (Tishey) Hughes; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Charlotte Williams and Loretta (Kent) Angerer.
