Harold J. Haverkamp, 92, formerly of Prairie City, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at University Hospital in Indiana.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at Hanover Presbyterian Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kentucky Unit of Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, for which he was a long-time volunteer reader, at their national office, 20 Roszel Rd., Princeton, N.J. 08540.

The son of Jennie (Lubbers) and the Rev. Anthony Haverkamp, he was born July 29, 1912, in Monroe, S.D. He graduated from Central College and earned a doctorate degree in psychology from the University of Iowa. In 1940, he married Ruth Boot of Prairie City. He taught in the Prairie City and Waverly school systems before joining the U.S. Navy in which he was a lieutenant during World War II. He was the director of counseling services at Hope College in Holland, Mich., and served as dean of Central College from 1952-62 before taking the post at Hanover College in 1962. Widowed in 1973, he married Mary (Hudson) Hansen of Louisville in 1978.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; six children and their spouses, Larry and Wenche, Judson and Ann, James, Beth, Kirk and Jennifer and Jeffrey Kehne; four stepdaughters and their spouses, Denise and Tim Brewer, Belinda and Ward Irvin, Lisa and Steve Porter and Natalie and Fred Lape; and 18 grandchildren and step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife and a stepson, Reeve "Skip" Hansen.
