Nita M. Hammer, 95, of Newton died Friday, March 25, 2005, at Nelson Manor Nursing Home in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Cheri Doane of Pella officiating. Burial will be at Center Friends Cemetery in rural Newton.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service. Memorials will be accepted to Center Friends Church and may be left at the funeral home.

The daughter of Edwin and Myrtle (Swearinger) Hammer, she was born Dec. 26, 1909, in Buena Vista Township of Jasper County. She attended Jasper County Rural School. She had taken care of the house for her father and later had taken care of the home for Mrs. Tim Campbell Sr. She was a lifelong member of Center Friends Church in rural Newton and enjoyed crocheting and quilting. She made many pieces for missions projects and as gifts to her family. She was a lifelong resident of Jasper County, living in the Kellogg and Newton areas.

Survivors include a nephew, Richard "Dick" Machin and his wife Darlene of Newton; two nieces; and four great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; twin sister, Nina Machin; and sister and brother-in-law, Jean and John Barr.
