Robert C. "Bob" Ham Sr., 85, of Newton died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

No services or visitation are scheduled. His body has been cremated. Wallace Family Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Memorials will be accepted to the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of William C. and Bessie (Frye) Ham, he was born Sept. 3, 1919, in Lorimor. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1939 and worked for Automatic for a time. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and also served in the National Guard.

On Nov. 30, 1940, he married Adele M. Bartels in Marshalltown. He retired as an automotive technician and worked for Target. He also owned and operated Ham's DX gas station in Newton and Colfax. He had also worked at Spain's Skelly gas station.

Survivors include his wife; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Timothy W. "Tim" Ham and Patti Garvin-Ham of Fort Collins, Colo., Charles R. "Chuck" Ham of Rock Creek West in rural Kellogg and Robert C. "Rob" Jr. and Susan Ham of Newton; three daughters and sons-in-law, Theresa A. Safris of Des Moines, Cecelia M. "Sake" Ham-DiGregorio and Vince DiGregorio of Livermore, Colo. and Justina M. "Tina" and Bill Coady of Newton; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Bernita Slavens of Davenport; a brother-in-law, Lou Cruchelow; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Marvin Ham and infant Eugene Ham; a sister, Phyllis Cruchelow; and a brother-in-law, Charlie Slavens.
