Roscoe W. "Rocky" Hallam, 78, of Newton died Thursday, April 7, 2005, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Newton with the Rev. Tim Johnson officiating. Burial will be held at a later date at Newton Union Cemetery. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted in his name and may be left at the funeral home or at the church on the morning of the service.

The son of Sammy W. "Sam" and Ferne E. (Wilson) Hallam, he was born Sept. 1, 1926, in Reasnor. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1945 and attended Simpson College, where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. On June 1, 1947, he married Dorothy E. Morrow in Newton. He was custodian at the First Christian Church for many years and retired in 1988. He also was a salesman.

Mr. Hallam was an active member of First Christian Church for 60 years. He served as an elder, chairman of all major committees, financial secretary and chairman of the board. He was a resident of Newton since 1931.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Mark Hallam of Newton; a brother and sister-in-law, Sam "Bill" and Connie Hallam of Concord, Calif.; an uncle and nieces, a nephew and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Darla Sue in infancy, and a sister, Marjorie Hackney.
