COLFAX -- Edwin Carl Behrens, 80, formerly of Colfax, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005, at Western Missouri Medical Center in Warrensburg, Mo.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Colfax First United Methodist Church. Cremation will follow the service.

Visitation will be held Sunday from noon until 8 p.m. at Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax. The family will greet friends from 2 until 4 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the church or the YMCA in Newton.

The son of Frank W. and Alma B. (Clausen) Behrens, he was born Aug. 18, 1924, in Green Island. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On Aug. 26, 1954, he married LaVonne Kullman in Carroll. He received a bachelor's degree from Upper Iowa University and then a masters degree from the University of Iowa.
Mr. Behrens went on to teach and coach for 14 years, eight of which at were at Gilman. Following his career as a teacher, he went to work at the Social Security Administration for 23 years as a disability examiner. He retired from that position in 1987. He was a member of the Colfax United Methodist Church, VFW and was a former member of the Masonic Lodge and American Legion.

Survivors include his wife; his children and their spouses, Chris and Marla Behrens of California, Md., Jane Behrens of Kansas City, Mo., Marc and Lisa Behrens of Olathe, Kan., Sheila and Bob Paczewski of Defiance, Ohio, and Paula and Scotty Walker of Holden, Mo.; eight grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Carol Behrens of Omaha, Neb., and Bob and Shirley Behrens of Bellevue.

Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister, Mary Lou Williamson.
