Paul J. Beck, 86, of Newton died Saturday, March 19, 2005, at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton with the Rev. Ernest Braida officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in rural Newton. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Memorials will be accepted to the Iowa Veterans Home and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of John and Anna (Hollerich) Beck, he was born Aug. 18, 1918, in Tipton, Kan. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On May 28, 1949, he married Pauline D. Blake in Marshalltown. He managed the Westend Laundry in Newton for many years. He also worked at Parsons and the Newton Foundry and as a painter and handyman. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 1655. He lived in Marshalltown and Toledo prior to moving to Newton in the late 1950s.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Conni Beck and Larry and Dana Beck, all of Newton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dianna and Don Yoakum and Julie and Dennis Anderson, all of Newton; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Kathryn Hartley of Midwest City, Okla.

He was preceded in death by his wife; three brothers, including a twin brother, Leo, and brothers, Felix and Narc; and two sisters, Leona Schmitt and Babe Bushell.
