Burdell "Burt" Ahrens, 74, of Newton died Friday, May 20, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Duncan Ahrens of Staunton, Ill., officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Emerson Hough Chapter of the Izaak Walton League. Memorials may be left at the funeral home.

The son of George and Lydia (Minger) Ahrens, he was born June 29, 1930, in Hawkeye. He graduated from Oelwein High School in 1948, and received bachelor of arts degrees in computer science and business management. On March 17, 1964, he married Elfriede "Freda" Hill in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Mr. Ahrens retired as a master sergeant from the U.S. Air Force and served from 1948 to 1968. He then went to work as manager of Data Processing for The Vernon Company and retired in 1988. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Emerson Hough Chapter of the Izaak Walton League, VFW Post 1655, American Legion Post 111, Air Force Sergeants Association and AARP. He enjoyed social time with friends at the Izaak Walton League and also enjoyed pheasant hunting, gardening, golfing and their cabin on the Mississippi River in Guttenberg, where he died.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Donnie (Cheryl) Ahrens of Des Moines, Daniel (Soni) Ahrens of Winterset and Duncan (Beth) Ahrens of Staunton, Ill.; two daughters, Belinda "Sue" Rawlins and Valera "Biss" (Brad) Eatwell, all of Newton; 13 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Alvin (Iona) Ahrens of Thornton, Lee Allan "Bud" Ahrens of Davenport and Donnie (Jeanne) Ahrens of Independence; and three sisters, Olive (Ray) Wolfe of Maynard, Glendora Russell and Dorothy Neece, both of Davenport.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons, Clint and Dennis Ahrens.
