Paul Alexander Stewart, 93, of 500 E. First. St. N. died of heart failure Saturday, Jan. 10, at Park Centre Health Care Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Newton with the Rev. Steve Mathison-Bowie officiating. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

The family will greet friends at a gathering at Park Centre following the service. Memorials will be accepted in his name to First Presbyterian Church or Willowbrook Adult Day Care.

The son of Harold and Isabel (Matthews) Stewart, he was born May 3, 1910, in Corning, N.Y. He earned a Bachelor of arts degree and a master's degree in science from the University of Rochester in Rochester, N.Y. On June 15, 1935, he married Ruth Byler in River Forrest, Ill. He was vice president of manufacturing for the Maytag Company and retired in 1975. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Newton, past elder and clerk of session, past president of Newton YMCA board and Newton country club, a city council member from 19776 to 1982, city water board member and chairman from 1982 to 1994, and was active in Park Centre affairs. He enjoyed working with stained glass.

Mr. Stewart lived in Corning, N.Y., Philadelphia, Penn., Oak Park, Ill., Kekome, Ind., and became a resident of Newton in 1952.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert Stewart of Arlington, Va., and Kenneth Stewart of Landrum, S.C.; a daughter, Ellen Streeter of Des Moines; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
