Mary Maxine Smith, 88, of 739 S. 3rd Ave. E. died of complications of a stroke Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A Celebration of Life visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Friends and family are invited to a coffee time and fellowship.

Memorials will be accepted in her name.

The daughter of Ralph William and Ellen Carson Smith, she was born March 3, 1915, in rural Jasper County, Sherman Township. She graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1933. She moved to Newton in 1981. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Jasper county Historical Society lifetime member, 75-year member of Sugar Grove Grange, Iowa State Grange, Seventh Degree member of the National grange. She enjoyed quilting and needlework and reading.

Survivors include a sister, Gladys Balmer of rural Colfax; two brothers, Ralph D. Smith of Winona, Minn., and Leland Smith of Newton; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Hugh C. Smith.
