DES MOINES -- Gary Edger Schermerhorn, 69, of Des Moines died Monday, Feb. 23.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Des Moines. Brooks Funeral Care - Tonini Chapel in Des Moines is handling arrangements.

Visitation will be held Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Tonini Chapel. Memorials will be accepted to the Animal Rescue League in Des Moines or Kavanagh House of 56th St., Des Moines.

He was born in Newton and joined the U.S. Navy following high school. He retired from The Des Moines Register, where he was awarded employee of the month. He loved his three dogs, King, Monroe, and Princess.

Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Kay and Mike Marasco; a brother and sister-in-law, Craig and Lucille of Burbank, Calif.; stepfather, Bob Olsen of Pheonix, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Pat Schermerhorn of Almont, N.D. and several nieces and nephews.
