Earl Helphrey

BISMARCK, N.D. - Funeral services for Earl L. Helphrey, 79, of 909 N. 12th St., Bismarck, N.D., a former resident of Newton, were held Monday, Oct. 15, at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Bismarck.

The Rev. Phillip Davison conducted services. Burial was in Sunset Memorial gardens in Bismarck.

Military services were conducted by the Bismarck Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Nickisch-Ressler Funeral Home in Bismarck handled arrangements.

Memorials to the Ronald McDonald House will be accepted.

He died Friday at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck.

Survivors are his wife, Afra; three sons, Dave, Bill and Jim, all of Bismarck; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Mr. Helphrey, a retired employee of Dakota Flooring in Fargo, N.D., had worked for many years at Conlins Furniture and had been a store manager for Montgomery Wards.

Mr. Helphrey, a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, had served in the Army in Europe during World War II.

The son of Earl M. and Ellen Jane O’Neill Helphrey, he was born Sept. 10, 1911 in Inland, S.D., was raised in Newton and was a 1930 graduate of Newton Community High School.

He was married to Afra Ott Gibbford in May, 1937. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton Iowa, October 12, 1990.
