James T. "Jim" Rutter, 60, of 9150 Highway 6 East died Wednesday, Jan. 28, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Newton with the Rev. David Rex of Metz Community Church in Metz officiating. A private family burial will be held Tuesday at Evergreen Cemetery in Leighton. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home where the family will greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Memorials in his name may be left at the funeral home or at the church the day of the service. Memorials will go to a special project at Skiff Medical Center in his memory.

The son of Theodore D. and Freda (Zang) Rutter, he was born Sept. 15, 1943 in Newton. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1962 and attended Iowa State University. He had just completed 34 years of service at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. He started as the assistant director of plant operations in November of 1969 and became director of plant operations three years later, a position he held for 31 years.

On May 29, 1965, he married Ruth D. Fleck in Leighton. He was a lifelong resident of Newton. He was an active member of Metz Community Church, singing in the choir and small group and was a past president of the church board, a past 4-H leader, a past president of the Iowa Society of Hospital Engineers and a member of Buck Crik Muzzleloaders. He also helped with the Babe Ruth Baseball League and with the Cardinal Relays.

Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael J. and Jessica Rutter of Newton; a daughter and son-in-law, Mechelle and Brent Den Hartog of Rochester, Minn.; three grandchildren; his mother of Laurel; and two sisters, Mary Hulleman of Ames and Lynne Gummert of Laurel.

He was preceded in death by his father.
