CORALVILLE -- Kenneth I. Hammer, 76, of Coralville, formerly of Reasnor, died Sunday, Jan. 10, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Chaplain Merle Smith of Skiff Medical Center in Newton officiating. Burial will be at Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton.

Friends may call Wednesday after 1 p.m. at the funeral home where the family will be available from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials to the American Lung Association may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Ira Lewis and Mabel (Wilson) Hammer, he was born Sept. 11, 1927, in Reasnor. In November 1947, he married Iola Ochs. He later married Virginia Thompson Moore on Oct. 11, 1969, in Lonetree. He was a truck driver for more than 40 years.

Survivors include his wife Virginia of Coralville; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Becky Hammer of Newton; four step-sons and daughters-in-law, Curt and Sue Moore of Iowa city, Arnold and Julie Moore of Sunrise, Fla., Barry and Shawn Moore of Des Moines and Tim and Carole Moore of South Amana; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Harold Salsberry of Newton; a step-daughter, Gina Laughlin of Council Bluffs; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; a brother and sister-in-law, Curtis and Lois Hammer of Arizona; and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a twin sister in infancy and an infant grandson.

Those left to honor Kenneth's memory are his wife, Virginia of Coralville, Iowa; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Becky Hammer of Newton, Iowa; his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Harold Salsberry of Newton; 4 step-sons and daughters-in-law, Curt and Sue Moore of Iowa City, Iowa, Arnold and Julie Moore of Sunrise, Florida, Barry and Shawn Moore of Des Moines, Iowa, and Tim and Carole Moore of South Amana, Iowa; his step-daughter, Gina Laughlin of Council Bluffs, Iowa; 6 grandchildren; his 16 great-grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; his 1 step-great-grandchild; brother and sister-in-law, Curtis and Lois Hammer of Arizona; and his 2 nephews.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, twin sister in infancy and a grandson in infancy.

He was a truck driver and drove over the road for 40+ years, having worked for several different trucking companies.
