GRINNELL -- Gerald Eugene Edwards, 81, of Grinnell, formerly of Kellogg, died Friday, Feb. 27, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Howard Lord officiating. Burial will be at Westfield Cemetery, southwest of Grinnell. Memorials will be accepted to the Kellogg Museum or Westfield Cemetery Association.

The son of Andrew Emmett and Theresa "Rose" (Lauber) Edwards, he was born Oct. 30, 1922, in Kellogg. He was raised in Kellogg and was a 1940 graduate of Kellogg High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and served in both World War II and Korea. He married Iona (Krumm) Benson on June 23, 1950, in Marshalltown. The couple made their home in Kellogg, where he owned and operated a grocery store prior to moving to Riverside, Calif., in 1956. While in Riverside, he was employed with Safeway Groceries and retired in 1984. He returned to Iowa and made his home at Rock Creek Lake and later moved to Seeland Park in Grinnell in 1996. He was a charter and 50-year member of the Kellogg Lions Club, and also was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Kellogg, Kellogg Historical Society, and Grinnell Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Peggy Schafer of Flagstaff, Ariz.; three sons, Craig Edwards of Kearns, Utah, and Grant and Scott Edwards, both of Quincy, Calif.; two sisters, Colleen Spain of Newton and Dorothy Hubler of Denver, Colo.; one brother, Paul Edwards of Broken Arrow, Okla.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Donald and Everett Edwards.
