COLFAX -- Alberta J. "Bertie " Collister, 72, of Colfax died Monday, Feb. 16, at her home.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Howard Street Christian Church with the Rev. Paul Elliott officiating. Burial will be in the Colfax Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Thursday after noon at Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the Colfax Public Library or the Howard Street Christian Church.

The daughter of Johnny Orval and Metta (McEldowney) Sullivan, she was born June 4, 1931, in Floris. She graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1949. On June 6, 1956, she married LaVerne Collister in Colfax. Shortly after her marriage, they made their home in Colfax. She worked at the Vernon Company in Newton and also at the Newton Daily News and Jasper County Tribune in Colfax. She was a member of the Howard Street Christian Church, where she taught Sunday School. She also belonged to LeFemme Women's Club and was a past matron of the Eastern Star. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crafts and playing cards.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters and sons-in-law, Lori and Terry Hilker of Colfax, Tracy and Patrick Lynch of Des Moines and Darcy and Jeff Brown, also of Colfax; six grandchildren; six sisters, Kay Johnson of Newton, Ruth Rayburn of Clear Lake, Mary Fulkerson of Newton, Eunice Taylor of Mesa, Ariz., Nanci Gee of Ottumwa and Judy McMains of Phoenix, Ariz.; two brothers, Frank Sullivan of Kennewick, Wash., and Harry Sullivan of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and three brothers.
