NORTHBROOK, Ill. -- Thelma E. Carlsen, 92, of Northbrook, Ill., formerly of Newton, died of complications resulting from double pneumonia Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Covenant Village in Northbrook.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Chicago, Ill., with a memorial service to follow at 3 p.m. in the fellowship center of Covenant Village, 2625 Techny Road, Northbrook, Ill.

Visitation is scheduled today from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Hanekamp Funeral Home in Northbrook, Ill. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Gideon's International, P. O. Box 140800, Nashville, Tenn. 37214-0800.

The daughter of Gerda and Swante Berg, she was born Aug. 27, 1911, in Chicago, Ill. She was raised in Chicago, active in the former Roaseland Evangelical Mission Church and leader of young woman's Bible study there in the early 1940s. She was a graduate of Fenger High School and American Conservatory of Music, both in Chicago. She was a former piano teacher at North Park College Community Music School. She married Norman C. Carlsen, former vice president and chief financial officer of the Maytag Company.

Mrs. Carlsen was a deaconess at Newton United Presbyterian Church, taught Bible study and Child Evangelism Fellowship, and was a member of Tri-T Sorority in Newton. She gave piano lessons and was very active in the Newton United Presbyterian Church. She served as a pianist and accompanist for many church functions, including a citywide and nondenominational youth ministry, "Youth for Christ." She also was an accompanist and pianist for Keswick Conference Grounds in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond C. and Freda Carlsen of Arlington Heights, Ill., and Dennis and Judith Carlsen of Germantown, Ohio; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Arthur S. Berg, Esther B. Nelson and Edith Berg.
