GRINNELL - Richard L. Ulrey, 64, of Grinnell died of cancer Saturday, Nov. 22, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. John Claussen of the Pleasantville Christian Church officiating.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Richard L. Ulrey Memorial Fund.

The son of Michael T. and Ursceldine (Crocker) Ulrey, he was born Sept. 6, 1939, in Iowa City. He was raised in Denver, Colo., for several years and later moved with his family to Newton. He was a 1957 graduate of Newton Senior High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Germany. On Aug. 23, 1963, he married Jean Benson in Kellogg and the couple lived for several years in Kellogg, Newton, Lynnville and rural Grinnell. They moved to Montezuma in 1975 and to Grinnell in 1992.

Mr. Ulrey was employed with Meisner Electric and Lockman Electric in Newton and later with Sieck Electric in Grinnell. He started his own business, Ulrey Electric, in 1987. He retired Jan. 1, 2003, after 45 years as an electrician. He was a member of the Lost Dutchman Mining Association, Gold Prospectors Association of America, NRA, North American Fishing Club, Grinnell Eagles Lodge and the American Legion in Montezuma and Grinnell.

Survivors include his wife of Grinnell; one, son, Terry of Grinnell; his mother of Newton; one sister, Patricia Winchell of Grinnell; three brothers, Mike, John and Virgil Ulrey, all of Newton; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and one son, Randy L. Ulrey.
