Robert J. "Bob" Steinberger, 81, of 3500-8 Hwy 14 N., died of complications of congestive heart failure Thursday, Jan. 16, at his home.

Memorial services will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Howard Vrankin, pastor of the First Lutheran Church in Newton officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery and will be held at a later date.

The family will greet friends immediately following the memorial service on Tuesday with a coffee time from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials will be accepted to Jasper County Steinberger Historical Museum or to the Jasper County Courthouse Christmas Lighting Fund and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Joseph E. and Mary (Petermeier) Steinberger, he was born May 31, 1921, in Baxter. He attended Baxter schools and machinist trade schools. On Oct. 19, 1947, he married JoAnne R. Mackerman in Newton. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a machinist at the Maytag Company for 15 years and, retired in 1983. He also had been a machinist at the Parsons Company, a carpenter for Morgan Builders and Eilers Homes in Norfolk. He was a heavy equipment operator, working for Don Kling Excavating and Lyle Welcher Excavating, both in Newton. He helped with the demolition of the old Jasper County Savings Bank, the old First Baptist Church, The Blue Room Cafe (all located where the Bank is currently located) and the old Morgan-Loehr Funeral Home (on First Avenue, where the Dairy Queen is now.

Mr. Steinberger was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Jasper County Historical Society, UAW Local 997 Retirees Union, a life member of the American Legion Post 111 and the VFW Post 1655.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Lee Steinberger, and a sister, Beulah "Boots" Ghent of Baxter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and four sisters.
