Norma L. Smith, 69, of Newton died Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Memorial services will be held today at 4 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Newton with the Rev. John M. Moore officiating. The body has been cremated. A private family burial will be held at Newton Union Cemetery.

The family will greet friends from 5:30 to 7:30 today at 1212 W. 5th St. S. in Newton. Memorials will be accepted to the Iowa Special Olympics may be left at the church at the time of the service or at the funeral home.

The daughter of Vern H. and Mable J. (Olson) Marten, she was born May 5, 1934, in Sioux city. She graduated from Jefferson High School in Jefferson in 1952 and attended the University of Iowa. On Jan. 22, 1961, she married Richard S. Smith in Des Moines. She was a parapro for the Newton Community School District at Berg Elementary School for 29 years and retired in 2003. she was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Smith grew up in Jefferson and lived in Des Moines from 1955 until 1972 when she moved to Newton.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Marty and Tammy Smith of Newton and Steve and Lenae Smith of Des Moines; a daughter and son-in-law, Traci and Tab Newbury of Urbandale; six grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dennis and Kay Marten of Urbandale and Tom and Diann Marten of St. Peter, Minn.; a sister and brother-in-law, Linda Marten of Richardson, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
