Esther M. Snetselaar, 83, of Newton died of a stroke Thursday, Nov. 6, at Nelson Manor in Newton.

Graveside services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines. Hamilton Funeral Home on Lyon in Des Moines is handling arrangements.

Visitation with the family will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. Per her request, the family requests no flowers. Memorials may be given in her name.

She was born in Lincoln, Neb., and was adopted by Christina and Charles Weedon. She married Richard Smith in 1938. He died December 1975. In 1977 she married Gysbert Snetselaar. They farmed in rural Newton.

Mrs. Snetselaar worked for Bruce Motor Freight in Des Moines for more than 25 years. She also worked as a microfilmer for Coke Brothers and Iowa Credit Union League. She retired in 1979 to be a full-time homemaker. She was a resident of Newton and also lived in Prairie City for a time.

Survivors include a son, Richard Smith of Prairie City; a stepson, Gene Snetselaar of Prairie City; three grandsons; three step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Caprice Barns of Florida and Joanne Matlock of Texas; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Madole of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, one brother, a sister, and her daughter, Christine Baumann.
