GRINNELL -- Earl Sleeuwenhoek, 80, of Grinnell, formerly of Jasper County, died Friday, Dec. 12, at his home.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Russell Wentling of Newburg-Chester Congregational Church officiating. Burial will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery near Newburg.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home where the family will be available from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to Grinnell Regional Hospice or to the Newburg-Chester Congregational Church.

The son of Barend and Mabel Clausen Sleeuwenhoek, he was born Oct. 26, 1923, in Killduff. The family moved to the Rock Creek area and he attended rural school there. On May 9, 1943, he married Viola Weaver in Lancaster, Mo. They lived in the Newburg area, where he operated a grain and livestock farm. He also operated a livestock and grain trucking service for area farmers.

Mr. Sleeuwenhoek was a member of the Newburg-Chester Congregational Church and the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed attending farm sales and auctions.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Jean Halverson of Grinnell; three grandchildren; one sister, Grace Sleeuwenhoek of Grinnell; and three brothers, Alfred Sleeuwenhoek of Newton, Lawrence Sleeuwenhoek and Wendell Sleeuwenhoek, both of Grinnell.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Carroll, Lloyd and Norman.
