Carroll W. "Kelly" Nelson, 79, of 500 1st St. N. died of respiratory failure Sunday, Jan. 19, at Park Centre in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Chaplain Merle Smith of the Skiff Medical Center officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at the Guernsey Cemetery in Guernsey.

Friends may call after 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Wallace Family Funeral Home where family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorials will be accepted to Willowbrook Adult Day Care Center or to the Good Samaritan Fund of Park Centre and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Selmer and Jeanie (Carroll) Nelson, he was born Nov. 10, 1923, in Gilman. He was a 1941 graduate of Gilman High School. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. On March 28, 1953, he married Phyllis D. Phelps in Nashua. He was manager of Walnut Grove Feed Plant from 1955 to 1968 and was co-owner and operator of Green Acres Farm Supply from 1968 to 1971. He retired in 1971 after an auto accident. Mr. Nelson was a member of the American Legion Post 111. He lived in Brooklyn for eight years prior to moving to Newton in 1961.

Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Pat Nelson of Mason City; three daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Rowe Winecoff of Lambs Grove, Nancee and Roger Etter and Mary Ann Nelson, all of Newton; seven grand-children; four great-grandchildren; and three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Verna and Howard Dodge of Sacramento, Calif., Helen and Dale Lippincott of Brooklyn and Mildred Smith of Grinnell.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
