MINGO - J. Ralph Maxwell, 88, of Mingo died of heart failure Tuesday, Nov. 4, at his home in Mingo.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with Chaplain Dale Dorrell of Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines officiating. Burial will be at Ashton Chapel Cemetery in rural Mingo.

Friends may call after 8 a.m. Friday at the funeral home where the family will be available from 6 to 8 p.m. A public Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to Intrust Hospice of Des Moines, Newton Home Health Care, Ashton Chapel or to the Unit Lodge No. 520 in Baxter. Memorials may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Charles A. and Mary (Leonard Stock) Maxwell, he was born Jan. 30, 1915, in rural Jasper County. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1932. On Feb. 5, 1954, he married Hazel Caroline Dawson in Omaha, Neb. He was a farmer and lived most of his life in Jasper County. He was a member of Ashton Chapel, Unit Lodge No. 520 and was a member of A.F./A.M. for more than 50 years. He also was a member of Eastern Star Clo Chapter, No. 303 Order Eastern Star and a member of State Center American Legion Post No. 534 in Mingo for more than 53 years.

Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Sue Maxwell of Newton; three daughters and sons-in-law, Valerie arid Rick Crozier of Mingo, Linda and Brian Faidley of Colfax and Diana and Bret Van Zante of Baxter; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren, a brother and sister-in-law, Forrest and Betty Maxwell of Collins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Carla; seven brothers, Frank, Henry, Howard, Clarence, Leon, Earnest and one in infancy; a granddaughter, and three sisters, Ruth Sooner, Daisy Santen and Myrtle Denman.
