W. Paul Massman, 82, of 112 E. 19th St. N. died of complications of diabetes Sunday, Jan. 19, at his home.

Private family services will be held Wednesday with Chaplain Merle Smith of Skiff Medical Center officiating. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

No visitation is scheduled. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the American Diabetes Association. Memorials may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Jay and E. Fern (Free) Massman, he was born May 31, 1920, in Iconium. He was a 1938 graduate of Centerville High School. On Sept. 2, 1941, he married Gwen A. Webb in Memphis, Mo. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was a millwright for the Maytag Company for 31 years. He retired in 1983. Mr. Massman was a member of the American Legion Post 111, VFW Post 1655, Emerson Hough Chapter of the Izaak Walton League and the UAW Local 997 Retirees Union.

Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul W. and Jeanna Massman of Council Bluffs; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marcella A. and Bryan Slick of Lincoln, Neb., and Judy A. and John Edward Orr of Baxter; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, G. Violet Bucher of Minoequa, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a great-grandson; brother and a sister.
