GRINNELL -- Teunis DeRuiter, 89, of Grinnell and formerly of Jasper County, died Monday, Dec. 1, at the Kavanagh House in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Lynnville Friends Church with Pastors Peter Schuler and Jeff Lee officiating. Burial will be at Sully Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell is handling arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Teunis DeRuiter Memorial Fund.

The son of Arie and Hermina Zuidema DeRuiter, he was born Feb. 21, 1914, in Jasper County. He was educated at Black Oak Country School near his home in Jasper County. On June 15, 1937, he married Jeanette Van Genderen in Sully. The couple farmed near Newton and later Searsboro, prior to purchasing his parent's farm north of Lynnville in 1948. He retired from farming in 1994 and the couple moved to Seeland Park in Grinnell in 2000.

Mr. DeRuiter attended Sully Community Church and later Lynnville Friends Church. He was a member of the Lynnville Telephone Board, Lynnville Saddle Club, Fox Hunter's Club, Richland Township Election Board and Bethel Cemetery Board.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanette of Grinnell; three children, Arnold DeRuiter of Lime Springs, Bonita Wertz of Johnston and Daryl DeRuiter of Calistoga, Calif.; one sister, Irene Moes of Sully; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Wilma Van Steenwyk and Elsie Baarda.
