R. Arlene Butler, 79, of Baxter, died Thursday, Dec. 18, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Services will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Baxter with Rev. Rollin Waters officiating. Burial will follow at Restland Cemetery. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Visitation will be held on Sunday from 12 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home where the family will greet friends from 1 to 4 p.m. Memorials in her name may be left at the funeral home or at the church on the day of the service.

The daughter of John and Neva (Crabb) Johnston, she was born Nov. 14, 1924 in Collins. She graduated from Baxter High School in 1943. On July 16, 1943, she married Rex J. Butler in Newton. She was a lifelong resident of the Baxter area where she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Congregational Church of Christ in Baxter.

Survivors include a son, Richard Butler of Baxter; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Darrell Foreman of Baxter; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Sharon Johnston of Baxter; a sister and brother-in-law, Kathleen and Donald Paul of Haverhill; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2002; two sons, Jim "Rabbit" Butler in 1995 and Mark "Bunny" Butler in 2000; and two brothers.
