Rites Held Monday For Will LeGrand
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Monroe Baptist church for W. N. LeGrand, who died Friday at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines.
The Rev. R. G. Nye was in charge of the service, assisted by the Rev. Donald Brong. Interment was at the Monroe cemetery.
Music was furnished by Marie Shaw, soloist, and Letha Gloyd, pianist. Pallbearers were Joe Templeton, Harry Worth, Donald Duncan, Laurel Buckley, Mark Shaw and Harold North.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Livingston and Mr. and Mrs. George E. Allen were in charge of flowers. Ivan Bell, Dick Van Eckeren and Raymond Browning were ushers with Joe Long assisting.
Obituary
William Newton LeGrand, son of John Wesley and Martha Karr LeGrand, was born October 5, 1880 in Marion county, Iowa, and departed this life April 10, 1953 in the Methodist hospital in Des Moines, at the age of 72 years, 6 months and 5 days.
On January 29, 1914, Mr. LeGrand married Mable Lucas of Knoxville in Des Moines. Mrs. LeGrand died July 20, 1927.
On September 5, 1935, Mr. LeGrand and Bess Baird of Omaha, Nebr., formerly of Prairie City, were married in Joliet, Ill., at the home of her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. George Heisterman.
In early manhood he became a member of the Evangelical church at Red Rock and was a trustee at the time of his death. He was a supporter for many years of the Monroe Methodist church.
Mr. LeGrand was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters. Surviving are his wife, Bess, his brother, Harrison, and sisters, Mabel, Mrs. Ulrie Clevenger of Monroe; Mrs. Elvira Marshall of Altoona; Ora LeGrand of Los Angeles, Calif., and a half-brother, Bud LeGrand of California. Ten nephews and eight nieces also survive.
Will LeGrand lived his entire life in Marion and Jasper counties. He was a widely and well known livestock and farm operator, and for many years, contributed much toward the growth and progress of Monroe and the surrounding community.
Mr. LeGrand’s home life meant much to him. Both socially and in business he made many friends by whom he will be greatly missed.
