John M. McCuen, son of John McCuen and Lydia Miller, was born July 27, 1861, near Monroe, Iowa. He departed this life, May 12, 1953 at Newton, Iowa, at the age of 91 years, 9 months and 15 days.
He was united in marriage on May 22, 1887 to Mary E. Woody and to this union were born 5 children. His wife, two sons, Chester and Elmer, preceded him in death. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Ethel J. Yoakum of Prairie City, Mrs. Goldie M. Van Der Leest of Pella and Carn C. McCuen of Colfax, two brothers, Edd and Ira McCuen of Newton, 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He also raised his granddaughter, Mrs. Doris Lester of Prairie City.
He was a member of the Christian church where services were held May 14th, Rev. Kenneth Dean officiated. Music was furnished by Mrs. Roy Buitenwerf who sang “Beyond the Sunset” and “Going Down the Valley” accompanied by Mrs. Carl Booker, organist. Bearers were Lybert Berkenbosch, John Geurts, Ira Van Wyngarden, Earl Brubaker, Will Charls and Wiley Roberts. Interment was in West View Cemetery.
