Funeral Services Held Tuesday For Mrs. Effie Baker
Funeral services for Mrs. Effie Baker were held here Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist church following a brief serice at Pella at 1:30. The Rev. James Sloan officiated.
Special music was provided by Mrs. Thelma Lewis who sang, “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Letha Gloyd. Mrs. Al Disrud served as organist. Leland Balmer and Duane Blackledge were ushers.
Bearers were France D. Poortinga, Frank Poortinga, Francis G. Poortinga, France C. Poortinga, Frank Jaarsma, and Marinus Aalbers.
A reception was held at the Neal Heemstra home following the funeral service.
Effie Poortinga Baker, daughter of Frans Ibe Poortinga and Ybeltze (Edith) Jaarsma was born in Friesland, Netherlands on August 2, 1872 and departed this life at her daughter’s home in Monroe on January 8, 1955 at the age of 82 years, five months and six days. She came to Pella, Iowa at the age of 15 years.
On December 22, 1894 she was united in marriage to Robert Baker. Two children were born to this union, namely, Edith, Mrs. Neal Heemstra, of Monroe, and Eva, Mrs. Charles Dufault of Marion. Most of her life was spent in Monroe except the last nine years in Pella.
Her husband preceded her in death April 16, 1936. Surviving are two daughters.
Besides her daughters she is survived by four grandchildren and six brothers: Ed of Vale, Oregon, George of Monroe, Gerrit, of Dow, Seib and Sam, all of Pella. She is preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, Dora; Bertha, Mrs. H. Jaarsma; Ella, Mrs. Jacob Aalbers; and Maggie, Mrs. Gerrit Aalbers.
She was a devoted wife and mother, ever faithful to the tasks of life and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
